[edit] Introduction

Lice are common pests for poultry. The lice feed on the blood, skin and feathers. A large outbreak can cause the chicken problems, such as poor growth and reduced egg production. In severe cases they can cause death. Lice are very small and have no wings. They are straw like in colour and look flat.Lice are found on both the skin and feathers of a bird and move from chicken to chicken when they are in close contact.

[edit] Symptoms

Lice will cause appetite loss which in turn causes weakened condition and make the chicken suceptable to diseases. Egg production drops, and heavily infested birds refuse to eat and gradually lose weight. Lice can be seen moving on the skin when feathers are parted, especially around the vent, head and under wings

[edit] Treatment

Dust the birds with insecticidal powder and clean outthe chickens house to discourage the parasites from coming back. Sprinkle insecticidal powder into all cracks, crevices and dust the chickens over as well. Regular checks and treatment of the birds will help keep any infestation down.
