[edit] Introduction
Pullorum Disease is an infectious poultry disease caused by the bacteria Salmonella pullorum. The disease mainly affects young chicks under three weeks of age, although other birds can become infected as well.Pullorum Disease is transmitted from an infected hen to chick through the egg. Infected birds can also pass the bacteria in their faeces, spreading the disease to other birds by contaminating litter, feed, and water. The disease can be also spread by contaminated incubators, equipment, footwear and clothing.
[edit] Symptoms
The first indications of Pullorum Disease may be reduced fertility, large numbers of chicks dead in their shells or chicks that die shortly after hatching. They can go on and live for a further 2 weeks before dying. Infected birds may display diarrhea, loss of appetite, droopy wings, weakness and chalk-white feces. Surviving birds carry on and show no signs, but usually become permanent carriers of the disease-causing bacterium.
[edit] Treatment
Antibiotics can be given to help recovery.
